Mechanical Engineering Department started functioning in 1967 when the institute was established by Ministry of Higher Education, Government of India, in collaboration with the Royal Dutch government. The department was established under the guidance of Dutch experts. Equipment in different areas of Mechanical Engineering and training to selected faculty of the department in Netherlands was provided. Presently, the department offers Post-Doctoral, Doctoral & Post graduate programs and short term training programs. For more information, the brochure of the department is attached.

VISION

To be a center of excellence in Mechanical Engineering with focus on Manufacturing Technology

MISSION

  • To offer education and training programs in the area of Mechanical Engineering for faculty of technical institutions and working professionals.
  • To undertake research and development in emerging areas in manufacturing technology for enhancing global competitiveness of industry.
  • To provide extension and consultancy services to technical education system and industry.
  • To develop need-based curricula and corresponding instructional material to enhance the learning outcomes.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of M.E. Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing Technology) program are:

PEO1

Graduates of the program will have in-depth knowledge to identify and formulate manufacturing problems, apply appropriate research methodologies, use modern engineering tools and provide technically sound, economical and sustainable solutions.

PEO2

Graduates will have ability for higher studies and undertake high value research on mechanical, manufacturing and other related issues.

PEO3

Graduate of program will have sound analytical and lateral thinking ability to engage in lifelong learning for professional advancement to cope up with multidisciplinary and changing technologies in manufacturing technology.

PEO4

Graduates of the program will have sense of social responsibility, will demonstrate ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in an ethical way, will play leadership roles in their profession, public services and community.

Program Outcomes (POs) of M.E. Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing Technology) program are:

PO-1

An ability to independently carry out research /investigation and development work to solve practical problems.

PO-2

Ability to write and present a substantial technical report / document.

PO-3

Students should be able to demonstrate a degree of mastery in Manufacturing Technology. The mastery should be at a level higher than the requirements in the appropriate program.

PO-4

Gain knowledge / skill in integrating Manufacturing Technology concepts for collaborative multidisciplinary solutions and carry out planning and management of projects as a member and a leader in a team considering economic and financial factors.

PO-5

Recognize the need for and have ability in life-long learning independently for professional advancement, demonstrate professional ethics, work culture and understanding of responsibility to contribute to community for sustainable development of society.

Programmes

The department conducts different programmes with the following objectives :

  • To enhance professional and career development of the target group and thus improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the technical education system and the industry.
  • To develop necessary capabilities of self regulated learning, problem solving, management skills and human relations in the target group.

Short Term Training Programmes

The department conducts one / two week(s) short term training programmes for the benefit of technical teachers and professional engineers. There is no course fee for the teachers of polytechnics and engineering colleges. A nominal fee of Rs 2000/- per week is charged from the participants from the industry. The schedule of short term training programmes is available on the institute web site under the link OPLAN.

Post Graduate Programmes

The department offers Master of Engineering (ME) in Manufacturing Technology in regular and modular forms. Details of the programme are available on the institute web site under the link M.E. Program. For ME degree the institute is affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh. The programme is offered primarily for teachers of technical institutions, officials of technical education system and working professionals from industry, duly sponsored by their competent authority.

M.E. in Manufacturing Technology (Regular)

The Regular programme is of two year duration, divided into four semesters. Ten courses are offered in the first two semesters and two courses in the third semester along with a preliminary thesis in a selected research area. The fourth semester is dedicated to thesis work in a relevant area as identified in the preliminary thesis.

M.E. in Manufacturing Technology (Modular)

For the benefit of technical teachers, who are unable to get 2 years leave for pursuing M.E., the  department offers a modular programme. Two module of six week each are planned during a year, coinciding with summer & winter holidays. The modular program covers two courses each module over three years and the seventh module is dedicated to thesis. work .

Special Features of the MODULAR Programme

  • Programme is flexible and is offered on modular basis to enable the students to take courses of study in the sequence and at a time convenient to the student.
  • It focuses on the mastery of minimum essential technical knowledge and skills besides the skills of learning to learn problem solving, effective communication and management.
  • It makes use of combination of instructional techniques such as group instruction, laboratory work, assignments, projects, expert lecture sessions, field visits to industry, seminars etc.
  • Assessment of student’s performance shall be based on both continuous evaluation and end semester evaluation with the use of a variety of assessment techniques matching the learning objectives of the different course of study.
  • Completion of course work will be followed by project work / thesis.

The department has well equipped laboratories with latest equipment.
